Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTI Algeciras) is the second largest container terminal of the Port of Algeciras Bay, which is located on the Phase A plot of the Isla Verde Exterior expansion area. 650-meter-long berths can accommodate up to 14,000 TEU class vessels, and 16 blocks run perpendicular to the quay. It is equipped with 8 quay cranes, 32 automated stacking cranes and 22 shuttle carriers.
Challenge
Port of Algeciras received attention due to its geo-political advantages in Asia/Northern Europe trade and North America/Mediterranean trade. As vessels can call without deviation to transport T/S cargoes, this port could become T/S hub of West Africa and Mediterranean. However, it had a huge burden to provide high productivity and competitive stevedoring charges to attract the liners.
Given the situation, the container handling equipment selected are:
– Quay crane: single trolley with twin spreader / OCR supported to remove tally operation
– Stacking crane: Automated Stacking crane
– Horizontal transport: shuttle carrier
One of the most difficult decisions was to introduce shuttle carrier. It has to work smartly with other equipment such as ASC, YT and TOS.
Solution: Semi-automated shuttle carrier
TLC (Terminal Logistics Controller) is the core module of OPUS Terminal. TLC creates job orders and sends them to cranes, ASC and shuttle carriers. This smart module gathers data from all terminal subsystems including workload of them and the signals such as sensors, RTLS/RFID, PDS (Position Determination System) and DGPS.
All the job orders are created, monitored, and efficiently controlled by OPUS Terminal. Regardless of automatic or manual processing, TLC controls jobs on the subsystems to secure the optimal performance, allowing the successful completion of jobs with the least possible number of movement.
